#ADGIFTED Another fabulous opportunity to read books I love, pick the genre and author I wish, in return of a review.

So back with Stewart Giles, I’ve said countless times now he’s fast become a favourite author of mine, previously held by Patricia Cornwall and Nora Roberts.

Australia : DS Jason Smith Book 14

From bestselling author: Stewart Giles comes another
brilliant addition to the Detective Jason Smith series

Detective Jason Smith is sick and tired of the English weather. It’s February in York and the dark, dreary days are getting him down.

When his wife, DC Erica Whitton wins a holiday to Australia, Smith is reluctant to go. He has no desire to go back home. Against his better judgement, Smith agrees to show his wife and daughter where he grew up. The perfect holiday soon turns into a nightmare as Smith finds himself in a race against time to save the only people he’s ever cared about.

Children in Smith’s home town are being murdered. There’s something rotten there, anevil Smith has never come across before, and the local police are not what they appear to be.

evil Smith has never come across before, and the local police are not what they appear to be.
When his wife is attacked and his daughter is taken, Smith realises he’s on his own. With the clock ticking, and not knowing if his daughter is alive or dead, Smithcomes face to face with the worst kind of evil he’s ever encountered.

Following this, in an idyllic setting, the unthinkable happens. Relentless
heart-pounding agonizing suspense will hold you spellbound from start to
finish. You will not be able to put it down. The pages will fly by while your
heart races on every one. This is a mesmerizing, one sitting, book. ‘ –

Eileen

I enjoyed treating about Smith’s adventures in Australia, as
always fast paced with sharp, witty dialogue. A family holiday takes a sudden
and shocking unexpected twist and becomes a personal crusade as Smith does what
he does best and has to battle to piece together what has happened. Well
written and believable as we follow Smith’s journey and how he overcomes the
various obstacles in his way. Fast paced, enjoyable crime thriller set in
Australia in contrast to York –

Kirsty

One heck of a thriller – a real page turner. The
best Smith story to date!-

My Review

Hold on, Hold on one minute did Stewart Giles really make Smith say 37 is old?! I’m offended, I’m a lot older and I refuse to see myself as old, just pleasantly matured in some ways.

Anyways I digress, this kicks off with a family holiday and murder soon follows. However the local police don’t seem to bother or see it as a priority. Ds Smith can’t relax even though it’s his holiday.

Horror seems to follow and with it coming extremely close to home, he has no choice but to investigate. Ds Smith investigates in his usual way and it unfolds an incredible story that I couldn’t wait to finish!!

Lies on theIsland: A detective Liam O’Reilly mystery

Island: A detective Liam O’Reilly mystery

Detective Liam O’Reilly is bored. Life on the peaceful island of Guernsey is quiet, but it’s too quiet for his liking. In the middle of an insurance fraud investigation he confides in his daughter and tells her he’d give anything for a juicy murder case to sink his teeth into.
‘Be careful what you wish for, Dad.”
Her words are still fresh in his mind when O’Reilly stumbles upon two dead bodies while investigating a fire at a container depot. The bodies have been burned beyond recognition and nobody seems to know how they ended up inside the container.

Soon it becomes very clear that something sinister is happening on the sleepy island and O’Reilly is thrown into the depths of lies and deception as he delves deeper into the lives of one particular family.
Everywhere he turns, he’s met with lies but O’Reilly is determined to find out the truth behind these gruesome murders even if by uncovering the lies means he’s putting his own life on the line.
Perfect for fans of Joy Ellis and LJ Ross.

MY REVIEW

Can Giles ever write anything I don’t like? I seriously doubt it, he’s fast becoming the No 1 of my favourite authors.

Medusa was my last Giles book and still it returns to my mind at times, it had a lasting impression.

The detectives are always gritty and real, you notice aspects of each character in real world people, which is why I love these books so much.

I do so wish these were tv series sometimes, but then would the image I have in my head ever match up to who they would cast, perhaps not.

Highly recommended for a good murder mystery.

Witch Fire on the Levels (Kate Hamblin #8) by David Hodges

MEET DETECTIVE KATE HAMBLIN IN THIS BESTSELLING SERIES FROM A FORMER POLICE OFFICER.

BEHIND ANCIENT SUPERSTITIONS, SOMETHING EVEN SCARIER MAY LIE.

A terrified young woman runs out into the path of Detective Kate’s car. The unidentified woman is fleeing something very strange on the misty marshes. She ends up in a coma.

Meanwhile Kate investigates alleged witch Lilith, a local woman who lives in an isolated old shack. She has been accused of vandalising a church. But Lilith has disappeared. In her hovel, Kate discovers hemlock and two sinister ragdolls pierced with pins.

One resembles police officer Eddie West and the other vicar Jacob Truly.

What happens next frightens the life out of the local community, but Kate believes that the criminals are closer to home than prime suspect Lilith. What’s really going on?

DISCOVER A BREATH-TAKING NEW SERIES OF MYSTERIES THAT YOU WON’T WANT TO PUT DOWN

Perfect for fans of Rachel Abbott, Robert Bryndza, Mel Sherratt, Angela Marsons, Colin Dexter, or Ruth Rendell.

THE DETECTIVES
Kate is a feisty, young police detective, with a dynamic approach to her job. She is plucky and tenacious, but prone to being impetuous and headstrong, which often lands her in tight spots and does not exactly endear her to her crusty boss, DI Ted Roscoe.

In stark contrast to Kate, her detective partner, Hayden, is an overweight, untidy ex-public schoolboy, with a pompous, laid-back attitude, which drives her to distraction. But he is also highly intelligent, with a keen, analytical mind and a practical, reasoned approach to everything, which, with a prevailing wind, can sometimes act as a brake on his partner’s more impulsive actions.

THE SETTING
A patchwork of fields, peat moor and marshland, dotted with picturesque villages and criss-crossed by man-made irrigation ditches or rhynes, the Somerset Levels covers an area of about 160,000 acres between the Mendips and Quantock Hills, in the County of Somerset. Sparsely populated outside the local towns of Bridgwater, Glastonbury and Street and prone to flooding, it is a haven for wild life, a wild, secret place with an atmospheric brooding stillness, which creeps into the very soul; a place where the booming call of a bittern or the beating of an owl’s wings in the mist is bound to fire the imagination of any self-respecting crime novelist, whose thoughts will invariably turn to . . . murder.

THE AUTHOR

A former police superintendent, with thirty years’ service. Since ‘turning to crime’, he has received critical media acclaim, including a welcome accolade from Inspector Morse’s creator, the late great, Colin Dexter, and he is now a prolific novelist with eleven published crime novels and an autobiography on his police career to his credit. His previous police experience has enabled him to provide a gritty realism to his thrillers and his Somerset Murder Series, featuring feisty female detective, Kate, and her partner, Hayden, has gone from strength to strength, attracting interest in the United States as well as in the UK.

MY REVIEW

Glastonbury and (Boscastle) are my spiritual home, my heart soars when I’m there, and for Glastonbury it’s full of like minded people, so the book drew me in being set there. Witches and murder it’s like this was written for me!!

A new author again for me, so I have no previous knowledge of the characters or the series, nore the writing style of the author.

From the first off you can tell there is personal experience within the police career, it shines through the writing.

A perfect quick read that I loved, could easily look and read more of them. While I’m still in spooky season mode I thoroughly enjoyed it.

My Review

Time and care was given into introducing these new characters and their back stories, so you soon know who is who and whybthey behave they way they do.

Good armchair detecting and sleuthing coming from our main character, that just can’t help herself, even if it has serious consequences.

Not as graphic or as fast paced as some of the books I’ve read, but in all honesty it was a tad refreshing that it didn’t go for the total shock gore value, and it’s a solid read, which I’ve thoroughly enjoyed.

Loving these books for these dark cold nights, it’s giving me a good escape from the real world, which is priceless.

So here is #Medusa the cover alone draws me in, but so do the words Miranda is Back!!

Mistress: Book 2 in the Miranda Trilogy by Stewart Giles

From #1 bestseller Stewart Giles comes the final book in the MIRANDA Trilogy
Miranda is back.
She’s escaped from Death Row and her thirst for murder is stronger than ever before. Detective Henry Swales has other ideas. But will he be able to stop the woman who has caused him more heartache than anyone else in his life?
As the sun sets on Death Row and the bodies continue to pile up, Miranda’s bloodlust grows. Nobody seems able to stop her.
Then she makes a mistake and is caught.
And just when Detective Swales thinks it’s all over, he finds himself involved in the most bizarre judicial farce imaginable. Nobody appears to know who is responsible for punishing this monster.
Will Swales stand back and bear witness to this perverse justice or will he resort to his own personal form of retribution?
This is a twisted psychological story that will stick in the mind for a very long time.

My Review

It all started in the car for me, packed up full we start our adventure to Cornwall, so I have ample reading time.

A cottage in Boscastle with no wifi and moody skies, roaring fire, what a divine holiday.

So the madness continues and she is back and badder than ever. The scheming starts and revenge is plotted.

Knowing it’s a trilogy my mind races to think up how the story will continue, and rest assured I will be reading it.

It seems eons since I last read a book and shared it.

#ADGIFTED received a copy to read in exchange for a review, and post. But all opinions and thoughts are my own.

First off, that TITLE what a head turner, it conjures up some horrific images, and plots into my mind. So I had to dive in

Now it’s all rainy, chilly and darker nights are drawing in, it makes me want to pull up a chair and snuggle down.

CHILD BEHIND THE WALL (Detective Ray Paterson #7) by Steve Parker

Discover a crime thriller full of shocking twists by one of the most exciting new authors you’ll read this year.

YOU WON’T WANT TO PUT THIS DOWN, PAGE AFTER PAGE OF ACTION AND CLIFFHANGERS. . .

4 a.m. on the outskirts of London

A police squad descend swiftly on a house, eager to exploit the rare opportunity of catching a burglar in the act.

Nothing could have prepared them for what they find.

From inside a room on the ground floor, comes the eerie sound of a woman singing, ‘the childmaker . . . the childmaker . . . beware the childmaker’.

Four officers break down the door to enter a darkened room. Their flashlights illuminate the body of a man with a knife in his chest and a bloody mess where his face should be.

Nearby, stands a small, thin woman. In her hand is a kitchen knife . . .

By the time, Detectives Ray Paterson and Johnny Clocks arrive at the scene, there is carnage.

But what is bricked up behind the wall is far, far worse.

A RACE-AGAINST-TIME THRILLER WHICH WILL HAVE YOU TOTALLY ADDICTED.

This is the sixth in a series of action-packed, edge-of-your-seat crime thrillers, with an ending that will have your heart in your mouth.

Perfect for fans of Kimberley Chambers, Damien Boyd, Rachel Abbott, Patricia Gibney or Martina Cole.

What readers are saying about STEVE PARKER’S BOOKS

“A must read for all crime thriller fans.” Viv

“A fast-moving action-packed thriller which will keep you enthralled from page one.”

“Another gripping, fast-paced and twisted caper for the most unorthodox police duo in UK fiction.” Donna

Loved the book, Clocks makes me laugh out loud.” Aileen

Detective Superintendent Ray Paterson is a young and (thanks to family money) wealthy womaniser, separated from his model wife and tipped to be the youngest ever commissioner of police. He knows he’s weak when it comes to practical policing and struggles to find a place among his peers, desperate to be a good policeman and not just a ‘climber’.

Detective Inspector Johnny Clocks is a foul-mouthed, working-class officer. He grew up surrounded by rogues and villains to become a first-class thief taker with the Met police. However, his childish attitude has short-circuited his career and he spends his days antagonising as many people as he can.

STEVE PARKER

Steve Parker was born and raised in South East London (Camberwell and Peckham). At age twenty-one he joined the Metropolitan Police where he served for twenty years in numerous high profile squads before being pensioned out with a serious back injury.
Thankfully, he was blessed with a complete lack of DIY skills so was legitimately able to get away with swanning around the house doing bugger all, all day long. Finding himself with plenty of spare time and a deep desire to never work for anyone again, he dug out an old screenplay he’d written when he was still a policeman and set himself a challenge to turn it into a book which eventually became his debut novel ‘Their Last Words’.

My Review

Whoa!! I did not expect that ending, won’t be spoiling anything but I never saw that coming in a million years!!

Not came upon this author before so it was all new to me, I do feel like I could of read some previous books to help me with character back stories, as I got a little lost in places. Which is unusual for me.

And it’s DARK, quite grim and definitely not for the faint hearted. It didn’t bother me, as I’m used to pretty dark gruesome podcasts, books and series. But for others seeking a light hearted murder mystery this is not the book for you.

Now I’ve found this author they are definitely going into my favourite pile, and I have the luxury of discovering all the previous books all winter, which quite frankly sounds like heaven to me.

Blood on the Island by Stewart Giles #BlogBookTour

Clearly becomming a new favourite author alongside Nora Roberts and Patricia Cornwell. It’s Stewart Giles with a new series.

#ADGIFTED all thoughts and opinions are my own, gifted the book for a review.

Intrigued as I’ve read many by Stewart Giles, either a series or horror. But here comes a NEW DETECTIVE, for me to dig my teeth into.

Blood on the Island.

From # 1 bestselling author: Stewart Giles, comes a new detective series set on the idyllic island of Guernsey.

What deadly secrets does the peaceful island of Guernsey hold?

Detective Inspector Liam O’Reilly has recently transferred to the island of Guernsey from the Special Detective Unit in Dublin and in this first installment we see him hitting the ground running.

He has barely set foot on the island when the body of a man is washed up on the shore. There is no indication of where the man came from – his hands and teeth have been removed and he has a crude tattoo of a dragon on his back.

When another similarly mutilated body is found, O’Reilly and his new team realise they’re on the hunt for a deranged killer.

O’Reilly is getting closer to the truth when the case is suddenly taken away from him. The Guernsey Border Agency, headed up by the arrogant DCI Franklin Urban has their own ideas as to who is behind these brutal murders and argue that the jurisdiction is now theirs.

O’Reilly left Dublin behind but his past soon catches up with him in the form of a Belfast thug employed by a man O’Reilly owes money to. When O’Reilly’s daughter is threatened by these people, he persuades her to join him on the island so he can keep an eye on her. Soon he’s faced with a choice – he can either do what these people tell him and risk everything he has, or he can defy them and spend the rest of his life looking over his shoulder.

Meanwhile, as DCI Urban and the Border Agency believe they’re getting closer to the truth, O’Reilly has his own theories and as these suspicions are proved correct he comes face to face with one of the most depraved killers he’s ever come across.

Stewart Giles – Author Bio

After reading English at 3 Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling around the world with my wife, Ann, finally settling in South Africa, where we still live.
In 2014 Ann dropped a rather large speaker on my head and I came up with the idea for a detective series. DS Jason Smith was born. Smith, the first in the series was finished a few months later.
3 years and 8 DS Smith books later, Joffe Books wondered if I would be interested in working with them. As a self-published author, I agreed. However, we decided on a new series – the DC Harriet Taylor: Cornwall series.
The Beekeeper was published and soon hit the number one spot in Australia. The second in the series, The Perfect Murder did just as well.
I continued to self-publish the Smith series and Unworthy hit the shelves in 2018 with amazing results. I therefore made the decision to self-publish The Backpacker which is book 3 in the Detective Harriet Taylor series which was published in July 2018.
After The Backpacker I had an idea for a totally new start to a series – a collaboration between the Smith and Harriet thrillers and The Enigma was born. It brings together the broody, enigmatic Jason Smith and the more level-headed Harriet Taylor.
Miranda is something totally different. A stand-alone psychological thriller, it is a real departure from anything else I’ve written before. This was followed by the sequel Mistress in 2019.
The Detective Jason Smith series continues to grow and there are now 13 books including the introduction: Phobia. Book 12: Deadeye will be published in February 2020.

My Review

I found this hugely engaging, new characters, new style plots, new locations, it’s fresh exciting and dramatic.

I love having familiar faces and characters, but it’s so good to get a chance to meet new ones.

Learn new back stories, add more depth and try new clues around this mystery.

Realistic flaws in the characters make them believable and relatable, which just makes reading all the more enjoyable. Real page turner.

My Review

I have been howling at this, not often is a good murder mystery quite so comedic as well. It’s been an eye opener for me, and one rabbit hole I will have to fall down.

The writing is absolutely genius!! The characters are despicable but so glorious at the same time. A modern day murder mystery but so dark and twisty. It’s macabre but delicious too.

Never have I enjoyed a book so thoroughly and laughed so heartedly, especially when you shouldn’t!!

I’m sure how ever lovely the estate was and is, I would never want these people as my friends to be snowed in with.

Definitely looking forward to more of this style and from this author.

#ADGIFTED although gifted it is reviewed freely by myself, and all opinions are my own.

I’ve honestly never come across this Author, and I have no idea what the theme was before I stated I would do it. I simply stated a yes, as frankly I need the distraction and I’m open to new authors and genres.

After reading the theme, it’s definitely my kind of book. I do love a murder mystery.

What is it about?

The club’s manager found the second Glass Doll. He claims to have been in the wrong place at the wrong time, but Dove doesn’t believe in coincidences.

THEN DOVE’S SURVIVING NIECE DISAPPEARS

Will she become the next Glass Doll?

Time is running out for her niece. Dove must race to catch a killer before it’s too late. Then a new lead tears a hole in the case.

My Review

Totally new author to me, so I had no experience of the writing style or pace, but I will say I enjoyed it. The pace and back tacking to clues and threads of evidence, were fast paced and perfect to keep you hooked.

Dove is a character we can all identify with, juggling family, and work. I love that they touched on mental health and being scarred both mentally and physically.

You end up sucipious of everyone, questioning their motives all through out. I loved it kept me on my toes!!

The story for me was original and unique, which I think is very hard in this genre.

A great read to take my mind off reality for a wee while, is frankly a godsend at the moment.

Nowhere to Hide by Stephen Puleston #BlogBookTour

Archive, blog book tour

#AD GIFTED but as always opinions are my own, I always stick to the genre I love, so it’s hard to not like them. I struggle to read genres that I have no personal interest in.

Once again it’s a new author discovery for me, which I find exciting, as if like me to start to love a particular author, you literally read everything they’ve ever wrote. I’ve Patricia Cornwell or Nora Roberts I have read them ALL.

The tile is intriguing and I like the cover of the book too, it lures me in. I found Nora Roberts purely by being drawn to her cover on one book! So I don’t underestimate the power of being eye-catching, and titles are important too.

Nowhere to Hide (Inspector Drake #7) by Stephen Puleston
A murdered mother… A failing police force…A detective looking for justice.

When drug addict Dawn Piper is found dead in her own home, her neighbours are far from surprised. Dawn’s habit led her to mix with some dangerous people. But this quiet mother of one was small fry …would anyone want Dawn dead?

Inspector Drake knows there is more to Dawn’s murder than a simple drug deal gone wrong. As he digs deeper, he discovers that Dawn hoped to clean up the streets of her community that are being overrun by drugs and the dangerous County Lines gangs that sell them. And it cost her her life. Have the police force failed the community they serve?
Drake is used to the murky world of organised crime groups. He knows the dirty games they play to evade arrest. But in his toughest case to date Drake is determined to make the guilty pay.
This time, they will have nowhere to hide”

The Author

Biography

I write crime fiction based in Wales and about Wales. The rural landscape of north Wales provides the backdrop to the Inspector Drake novels. And Cardiff the capital of Wales provides the setting for the Inspector Marco novels set in a modern urban environment.
I love the novels of Raymond Chandler, Ian Rankin, Mark Billingham, Henning Mankell, Val McDermid – the list could go on! And I enjoy watching detective series on the television the recent Hinterland series based near Aberystwyth in Wales was great. One of my favourites is the French series Spiral but The Bridge and Broadchurch and the Rebus series with Ken Stott and Kenneth Branagh in Wallander are great too.

I have been on writing courses at the Welsh Writers Centre in Llanystymdwy, North Wales tutored by Matt Whyman and Marcus Sedgwick as well as crime writing courses with Peter Robinson and Andrew Taylor at the Scottish Writers centre.

I was born in Anglesey an island off the north Wales coast and after leaving school in Holyhead I went to University in London before training as a solicitor/lawyer. I practised in a small family business doing criminal work in the magistrates and crown courts, divorce and family work.
I still live on Anglesey, North Wales near the beach and the mountains of Snowdonia

My Review

After reading Stephens biography I was fully invested. He loves Spiral (one of my favourite series) and boardchurch and the bridge. So straight away I’m thinking he has excellent taste in viewings, so he must know and feel what means those series so successful and enjoyable.

I like the way things are written, and based in Wales. It feels familiar and homely. Nothing too graphic or crude, it’s cleverly written and the storyline flows well.

I think I like Drake, but I want to read more books with him in, to build up a a better picture of him. He sounds complex and driven, all that I expect from an Inspector.

I like the thriller aspect of it, and I enjoyed reading it and learning new things too along the way. Definitely looking out for this author for more.
