On Holiday with a #HipReplacement 36 weeks post op

Archive, Arthritis, Family Adventures, Health, Hips, Hypermobility, Hip replacement

It was lovely to get away on holiday finally and soak up some sunshine, and warmth into my bones. This is the first time aboard with my new implant.

And it was quite different to other holidays that have been marred completely with pain and immobility. But it also wasn’t the completely ‘normie’ holiday I was expecting either.

Rather it was something in between. A limbo of sorts. Pain in the hip has definitely decreased and that is wonderful, but the knees and back take the hips old role. So the walking stick still ever present to keep me stable. Thankfully I took this and my splint for me hand, both in constant use.

My hands pain did improve while away, though of course using the walking stick does hurt the hand greatly. Using the splint at night helped, as well as my ibuprofen gel. Well worth taking with me. It was even heavenly on my aching swollen feet and ankles.

As I said in a previous post, I had a slight accident on the flight over to Rhodes, where my leg was trapped from people rushing to get passed me, so the ‘good’ leg looked unsightly all week.

This is how it looked on the first morning on holiday.

But it got a lot worse over time. And the leg seemed to collect bruises all over it, I counted 20 at one point.

Last day the bruise finally looked like it was going. The knee gave me some issues especially day 5 onwards, super squeaky if pressed and sharp pains on heel strike while walking.

I’ve noticed I can barely swim now, the tiredness and ache the leg experiences is something I’ve not had before. I’m usually a very very strong swimmer, but now not at all. I will work on this though. Wonder if other hippies have experienced this?

Overall though what a brilliant time away, and the sunflower lanyard certainly worked and helped on the way home, twice I didn’t have to queue as long as everyone else, and honestly it was much needed and appreciated help!! Thank you airport staff. Pride had stopped me so many times, and even taking photos I would push the stick away. Hiding the real truth. But here it is and me, as it’s as part of me as anything else! Here’s to admitting you can’t do everything. And some help can really change your outlook on some experiences.

I totally forgot to post my last few boxes, I was too busy using it and enjoying it all. And of course I’ve been busy with life and family. So I will show my newest box. The August Heatwave (hope we get one) box.

In this it’s a box perfect for the summer, though weirdly I’m not feeling the summer lately, perhaps it’s due to no summers holidays here as daughter is busy working too much, and weather went pants too.

My Review

As I said above I adore this series, it’s just light hearted enough to be enjoyed thoroughly on holiday, while not been too graphic and gruesome, although the mysteries keep you well entertained.

Jenny’s reluctantly to divert her focus off catering to solve murders always makes me giggle, as she’s so good at it. She is a book version of Murder she wrote, trouble always seems to follow her.

Always entertaining and I love the characters, they are so English to me. Another one loved wholeheartedly x

1yr #Hipaversary #hiparthroscopy

It’s finally been my 1year Anniversary since my last surgery, my Hip Arthroscopic surgery. And to celebrate it, we did it in style.

First off we visited #50cent for his 15th Anniversary Get Rich Or Die Trying Tour, this is immense, I loved every single second of it. We had Lethal Bizzle first up, then 50cent and GUnit. It was like the 00’s had come alive once again. And better yet, we knew once we got home and slept, we were off on Holiday!!

So off we flew the next day in the afternoon to #Rhodes hip obviously hates flying but I was well prepared for this.

To arrive here in the gorgeous sunshine, I knew it was the right decision to go.

This one wonderful week away, we visited as many sites as we could. Drove around the island and swam nearly everyday. I ate better here than I ever have done on a Spanish island (easier for veggie food too) the warmth honestly did my hip some good, as well as my hands. Though ankles continued to swell each day if we had been on our feet alot. But painwise the warm dry heat does absolute magic to them!! This is why pensioners move aboard.

We did a fair amount of steps, we had to stop every few so I could adjust hip, take stock and breathe into it. But boy oh boy was I rewarded. Going down was always my worse part, but I did it and so did my dodgy ole hip that’s going to be replaced. It’s like its final adventure with me. I get sad thinking that soon it won’t be with me, but I know it’s daft really. Anyone else feel a bit sad??

So I’ve made it to 1yr and it’s been a huge learning curve, my fitness has improved greatly, the muscles around the hip are stronger, I trust myself more which was a huge mental issue for many years. And all because I took physio seriously and did it religiously. I also stopped trying to race ahead and do more than my hip wanted to do, I kept to the basics and finally got results. Granted it never stopped my pain or limitations of the hip, but I’m sure that once it’s replaced, it will greatly improve my recovery period.

And better yet, I didn’t put on the usual 5lbs + that I usually do on holiday!! We ate more like at home, less carbs, more protein and salads and I came home 1lb heavier, which has already gone 3 days after getting home.

Obviously I got off the plane and I couldn’t speak, lost my voice. Maybe air con had something to do with it. The day after being home I had to see the doctor, as I felt super poorly. And it’s laryngitis so on antibiotics and feeling very sorry for myself right now. But what a week we had!!!!

Weekend away with family

Day 9, 10, 11, 12 post #intra-articular steroid hip injection, and day 2,3,4,5 for post steroid hand injection. Both have been tested greatly in our weekend adventures.

Sunny Barmouth has been glorious this holiday!! We loved swimming in the sea, I got to have my nephew’s swimming with me, and such giggles we had all round.

The cottage was amazing, it was 300yrs old,the history and tales it could tell. All higgledy piggledy and full of character.

Walked along beaches, which is still hugely problematic hip and mobility wise. Hip is 80% better than before the steroid, so it’s not fully pain free. Hand however is absolutely fabulous. Aches yes at the end of the day, but I expected that. Beach walks take A LOT out of me, and pain levels soon rise quickly.

So now we are home, it’s time to rest for a while, to settle the hip down and see how long it stays angry for. But I’m definitely impressed with the hand pain which had totally crippled me up until that steroid injection. I wonder how long it will last for?
