Time to share again what I’ve learnt or experienced over this last week. Well I’ve learnt even with a walking stick I simply can’t stand, it hurts my back, my thigh, ankles and even the ball of my feet swelled up!!

So a day out is still equalling a few days rest, so not where I’d like to be in terms of daily living.

But I did manage to paint my toes for the first time since my op. And finally my big toe nails have grown back, for some reason I lose my big toe nails after surgery?

Ankles are often swollen now, especially after days out, so I need to see the GP again. As even my ball of my foot is swelling up. God knows why.

Scar is looking pretty decent, and I only remember it when it stings, aches after a long day. It’s still so numb around 3inches side to side all down the length of it. But it’s early days yet, it may come back.

In between days of doing things out and about, and rest days, I try to squeeze in at least 2 sessions of physio at home, using my step and ankle weights.

And in doing both legs in my physio, my left leg (non replaced hip) is painfree but so much weaker than the replaced hip. Hoping by regularly doing both legs now it will catch up at bit.

The weeks are flying by, and with the warmer weather we as a family are getting busier, which is lovely. But boy oh boy I’m still paying a high price for any activities.

Which I wholeheartedly admit is gutting. I truly wanted, wished and hoped that by now this magic bullet surgery would be the answer and I’d be skipping into the sunset.

And while this surgery has been amazing, it’s clearly not the sole issue I thought it was. I’m struggling with my hands alot, but not just them though my ankles, knees and shoulders too and I feel cheated. All I’ve ever wanted is my life back, who I was at 32 and I’ve chased this dream headlong ever since.

I had no concept that I was literally fixing the hips to then swap the goal post and need intervention on other joints.

So I’m not going to compare to others healing times anymore, it is what it is. I’m not sure if it’s the Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, Hip Dysplasia or Arthritis that is ruling my life, but something is, more than I care to admit too.

It sucks that I have some issues, I have to remember not to focus on them, I need to remember the positive thoughts and drive my energies into them.

No physio appointment booked this week, so physio at home is foundation basics to keep movement going and no stress out other joints. Using ankle weights for resistance.

  • Hip abduction x 15 reps
  • Hip extension x 15 reps
  • Hip extension (backwards) x 15 reps
  • Hip flexion x 15 reps
  • Single leg lunge on areobic step x 15 reps
  • Monster walk x 30 steps

Going to work on these while I await the next physio appointment.

Found these exercises on Pinterest and I will try to add some of these are well, later on in the week.

So here it is, never heard of it before, but hubby got tickets so why not. We planned on the Saturday at first, but weather was going to be better for Sunday, so that’s the day we planned.

Which honestly helped, as the hip needed some recovery days between this and that physio session. Man that ached my abducters and glutes so much!!

But if you lived closer you could easily do both days. As it’s Free!! Crazy right, especially when you see what’s on offer too….

It’s meant to be a family fun weekend and located in Sherwood Pines Forest. There they have live music, bike demo, bike stunt shows to name but a few things on offer.

They also offer things especially for little ones, games and activities with competitions and even freebies.

And of course if you fancy trying out some bikes, such as Raleigh, Haibike and Lapierre then all that’s needed is your photo id, get a wristband and demo bikes away.

I’d like to ride a bike again, but I’m not convinced I’m entirely ready yet. A simple level 3 resistance on a stationary bike is hard enough, for 5 mins, so I’m unsure. But I believe hubby is going to demo some bikes if we are early enough to do so. Maybe he could try out some electric bikes for me.

Hubby signed up to try some demo bikes.

We got some bunny holding in. Saw chickens, tarantula, snails, and tortoise too.

We watched #Fumbledore kids entertainer while Mr Moon rode the electric bike. I found Fumbledore was hilarious.

Ted Robbins comedian doing Man Vs Food which was good sports! Loved it .

Grove Street gave us songs to bop along too, and sing along with. Great atmosphere.

Savage Skills entertainment, Alec and Tom riding bikes and jumping, ramps and flips.

Ted Robbins was a brilliant host, although he had no voice at all.

And lastly we heard Christina And Harry singing the last hour out. But I was sadly work out by this point, hip aching beyond belief, so I needed to get home, and a decent seat.

After today I feel that although the hip is improving, it’s still far from normal. I still get pains, and stiffness, and I feel unable to stand for long. I have a long way to go to be fixed.

Not even been a whole week since the last physio appointment, but I’m back here again!!

Since the last appointment we had a busy weekend, which admittedly wiped me out proper. Until Tuesday in fact, then boom its Wednesday and time to do physio.

At NO point could I do my at home exercises, as my leg is so achy and swollen in-between appointments.

And this is my hand, my walking stick hand.

Rings removed as it’s so flared up lately. By Tuesday it was improved, but still podgy.

So here we are 18 weeks have zoomed by I will admit. Though earlier weeks I swore they dragged. And I’ve learnt a few things, I still HATE stairs. The leg swells up over 2inches bigger when I overdo it, and I can’t bend well and get up again. I honestly thought I would be more agile than I am. Though is that Arthritis or the Replacement??

And I still can’t lie on that side comfortably, it’s vile. But I can cross my legs, though I try not too, just in case.

This time we did a killer workout, I may not move for a few days!!

  • Stairs 12 up 12 down
  • Stationary bike level 3 x 5mins
  • Hip bridges x 10 reps
  • Single leg hip bridges x 10 reps (OMG that was a killer!)
  • Front leg raise ankle weighted x 10 reps
  • Front leg raise, abduction ankle weighted x 10 reps
  • Prone lying heel to butt ankle weighted x 10 reps
  • Prone lying Knee raise ankle weighted x 10 reps
  • Swiss ball squeezes between knees x 10 reps
  • Bosu ball deep lunge x 10 reps
  • Side steps green banded x 40 steps

Doing these my leg wants to fall out so much, it’s so hard to keep it centred. I’m terrified it will dislocate the hip if it falls.

This was ridiculously difficult, my glutes burned. Didn’t leave the floor much, but boy it activated something.

Day 121 #hipreplacement Second land physio

Finally a second appointment, delays due to Easter holidays, then holiday for my physiotherapist too. And finally we are here, 3 weeks later.

Hopefully we can work on some weaknesses and build up some much needed muscles too. This month has been pants for physio, and Arthritis flare ups, so I really hope things start to settle down.

This time round (following knee discussion)

  • 5 mins level 2 stationary bike
  • 15 reps 30kg leg press
  • 15 reps green band hip extension backwards
  • 15 reps green band hip abduction
  • 15 reps green band hip extension forwards
  • 15 reps green band side leg raise
  • 15 reps green band clam raise ( it doesn’t raise at all, yet does when leg is straight?)
  • 15 reps front leg raise, abduction, lower and return
  • 15 reps Swiss ball squeeze between knees.
  • 15 reps bosu ball walkovers
  • 40 steps green band straight side steps

I’m absolutely shattered. I walked in reasonably straight and barely needing the walking stick. After this 30 mins, I’m like a waddling Bambi legged idiot. Totally needing the walking stick to keep me upright!!

This week I’ve been camping, we went for a few days in Cornwall. Had an event planned for the Saturday, so we decided to make the journey worth while, we set off Friday and would come home Monday.

Arrived at the most fantastic campsite just outside boscastle called Trebyla Farm it’s a simplistic working farm campsite, with electric hook up and caravans too. Idea for those wanting to escape the world for a few days. So no WiFi, no posh toilets with grand baths, or clubs and pools here. It’s back to basics camping, I love it!!

Just toilet blocks and showers available, with hot water and free so what could be better. Also available is a kitchen area with microwave (I couldn’t work it) freezer for your essentials, and dry area to wash up in.

Everything was super clean, well stocked with toilet roll and hand soap too. So I didn’t need my emergency packed ones. As some sites often run out, or don’t re stock often. These were done every morning. All bins checked each day too.

We have a large spacious tent, bought when we had 4 small children we used to camp with. But it’s size means I can stand up, so no bending to get in and out. Which honestly I’m relieved at, as I don’t think the hip would like that.

The hip coped very well with a lot of things I requested it to do. But mainly I do the kitchen stuff, I sit to make a coffee or sandwiches as I don’t like to stand too much.

And banging in pegs is not one of the things I can do, I still struggle to squat down and get up again. I’m not agile and I get stuck, so better for me not to try!

I definitely did need my pain meds, a lot more of them and my walking stick at all times. Also I needed rest stops all the time. But it coped, and I would do it again, I just need a few months to recover lol.

Weather and cold obviously made it feel stiffer to move, and I often felt seized into a position, that would take time to get out of again. But once the joint got moving, it was happier.

But look at the view we had, it’s hard to be grumbling and sad when this view greets you each morning!!

Not many on the site, so the area was super peaceful, and you are left alone to relax and plan days in leisure. Exactly what we needed. My only regret is coming home after 3 nights. I will be returning for sure.

It’s been a funny weird week, I’ve not done much physio, and when I have done it’s caused so much knee pain, so much pain!! I’ve been forced to rest.

Had a lot of committments this week, family wise and going out to places, so the physio hasn’t been easy to slot in either. But I even found walking around town leisurely, this week was a miserable affair.

Straight away my knee was in agony, and I felt I hobbled, and waddled even with my walking stick. And using that so heavily, it’s flared up my hand too. I’ll be honest, I was better than this before surgery, so you can imagine this was quite depressing, and emotional to realize that.

And though that’s a huge negative, I may be a bit down this week, but I’m not out!!

Why have I struggled more this week, is it because I went out a fortnight ago? Or because I’ve had to increase the daily living, family commitments? I’m not sure.

All I know is, my Thigh KILLS, like a tooth ache nagging pain. And my knee is not happy either with walking, or with physio. I don’t see anyone for a while, except occupational therapist for my hands. So I guess increase rest periods and go steady as I can.

But I am camping hopefully at the weekend, so who knows how the hip will behave?? I will keep you updated.

Has the weather turned for you? It sure has here, sadly with that comes the ever present extra aches, my hands are becoming clicky and stiff once again. (The reprieve wasn’t long enough)

The hip is achy and not feeling so painfree, but as every other joint hurts I know it’s just that time it’s all meant to hurt again. So it’s definitely shoots my happiness in the foot. But I need to make the most of it, as the weather is never going to be permanently dry and warm, mores the pity!!

I still can’t do weights, but as joints hurt, I have to do some physio to engage the muscles and stop them from dislocating.

Can’t hold weights, but I can pull the theraband resistance bands, that o have tied to my door. These are stabilizer exercises for the shoulders, but they help my wrists and elbows too.

Finished off with rolling a ball in a circle to the right, then circle to the left, then push the ball up and down the wall, do this both shoulders.

So it’s week 15 and though I have had rapid recovery as predicted. I’m still walking with a walking stick, I have numb areas, (seriously cant feel a thing!) Niggles of pain in groin occasionally, and thigh aches. Knee pain occurs with physio but quickly disappears. And the whole thigh still swells up.

But upon reading medical journals, it seems it’s not unusual for the recovery to keep going albeit at a slower rate for the first 2 years. So it seems frustrating at times, but really it is early days.

And here ends my daily updates, as now the progress is more minimal, and things are just going to be repeated until it gets fully better. I’m thrilled that I never once felt alone in this recovery, so thank you so much.

Day 104 #HipReplacement

As the week progresses, I need to start thinking of Saturday which is a party day for my Grandson, he will be 3 yrs old. So the weekend won’t be used for walking or physio.

So I need to get my physio in on these 4 days at least. Still having some thigh pain I’m reluctant to do much. And my elbow is still super sore and feeling odd from partially dislocating on Friday, so weights are definitely out for now.

I think I will do my hardest ones, but very low reps for now.

  • Mini squat 15 reps
  • Clam raise 15 reps (some improvement there)
  • Side leg raise 15 reps
  • Prone lying, bent knee raise 15 reps
  • Aerobic step lunge 15 reps (I don’t have a Bosu Ball)
  • Aerobic step overs 15 reps
  • Ankle weighted side steps 30 steps

I do NOT lunge as well as this, more like a lean forward with the weight solely on the operated leg. Then push back off that leg. Really hard, really difficult, and does twinge my knee at times. I need to speak to Physiotherapist to check it’s ok. I do less of lunge to protect the knee at the moment.

For the walk overs the step, I do exactly what it says, I use the operated leg on the step and step right over with the opposite leg, keeping the operated leg planted the whole time. Again difficult for me,but hoping it helps with strength.

Day 103 Geocaching Fails

We decided to do some walking but on flat ground as the thigh has been aching since Friday night, but I couldn’t waste this glorious sunshine.

So off we trot to explore the marshes, funnily enough we’ve lived here for 14yrs and not once gone to explore them. So today’s the day!!

Planned to do a loop around the water and it’s all pretty much flat. I’d love to see otters, but it’s not the right time of day to see them. Squirrels and birds are all we will see today.

Had a few (4) caches planned to find, but we failed at ALL of them. We tried to find them, but they are certainly too well hidden. And too many nettles for me to stick my hand anywhere too.

In my head the marshes were just boggy grounds, but actually we saw lakes, rivers, and small boggy pools, each with a different selection of wildlife to be found there.

I could hear frogs but sadly didn’t see any.

Sat down a few times as I needed too. Sneaked inside hides to have a drink break, and to gaze at the birds.

One day I would like to cycle it, the path seems easy enough too. I just need to get over my fear of putting the leg down.

It was so peaceful and quiet even on blazing hot bank holiday, I’ll definitely be returning again, possibly with some binoculars too!! And definitely in the evening to catch the elusive otters.
