And so it begins…..

Here I am yesterday, at the hospital awaiting to find out my destiny. Nervous, sick with anxiety, yet excited!?! It all starts with this appointment.

Weird and eerily quiet, so unlike ROH we are seen quite quickly for there, about 40mins after my actual appointment time. Sadly no specific surgeon but a pleasant registrar no less.

Not familiar with symbios he gains an audience with another consultant that works more directly with my Surgeon to help explain the process. But he’s doesn’t do it well, he ignored my husband, who let’s face it needs the information more, as he’s living through it. And answered more like a politician than surgeon.

But not matter, we walk away being added to the waiting list and being referred for the 3D CT scan. How long this time frame is, anyone’s guess. Seen as he didn’t really answer. We got 4mths out of him, but 4 months to completion or 4mths to scan is unsure??

So moving forwards from that, it’s time to reflect on what’s ahead, read more, research more. Thankfully on Facebook there are countless supportive friends going through or been through the same process to help guide me.

Today was physio and I honestly walked in thinking we would revise the program in preparation for surgery, but instead she’s too happy with my progress and strength that as long as I do it at home, I’m fit enough already and muscles are strong enough to keep implant stable. So we’ve left it as an open appointment, to come back as soon as I can after surgery.

Bit disappointed in that I’ve left again, but I understand why. I do always do my at home physio and workouts, I am religious in doing it, so there isn’t a need to go in and show her each week.

Overall this year I’ve started to be unaided though it’s incredibly painful at times and not for long. It’s still a win.

I’ve also lost 12lbs since Jan. We are eating better, making better choices overall. And making so much more of an effort with physio, exercise and weights in general. So my physio is right, I’m in a much fitter stronger place than I was facing my Arthroscopy surgery back last Sept.

And if you facing helping me with buying a tragically hip tee, you can find the link here

And similar if you are a fellow zebra with ehlers danlos syndrome like me and my daughter, she designed a tee here she needs to sell 4 to start the campagin off.

What’s been going on since we last spoke? Well I’ve been wrestling my own demons trying to make a decision, and honestly I’m no closer. I speak to fellow hippies, family and physiotherapist, and ultimately they all say it’s up to me, but I’m confused and overwhelmed.

But warm weather has returned and sadly pain hasn’t gone with the wet weather, so I know for sure now that the steroid injection has worn off, I had a glorious month, I’m just sad it wasn’t longer.

Not only has my hip steroid worn off but so too has my thumb one too, so I’m feeling like most joints and bones ache beyond belief. And the opposite thumb is flaring up too. Thank goodness for splints. Sadly for this I don’t see a rheumatologist until 9th October, so heck of a wait. Least hip is in 2 weeks time.

Because it’s all kicked off again, my physio appointment was gentle this time, lower reps, some exercises removed too, as she could see the pain some brought on. I fear I’m coming to the end of any possible improvement physio wise, as muscles are strong now, stronger than they’ve ever been. I see them again after seeing the Surgeon.

Pleased to say I’ve completed week 4 of #couch25k #couchto5k yes it totally took 3 weeks to do the three runs, but life, flare ups and events filled my time in between. But I’m over the moon we are still on this improvement train, ankles and knees are benefiting from it. Now up to 3mins brisk walking, slight bounce to step unaided. After 3 mins it’s either breathing or piriform is that kicks in, so it’s not fully sustainable, but it’s improving. Only bad thing is, I constantly feel like my hip joint is a sword, each step is a stab!!

Bad back and hippie woes!

This week I launched my Tragically hip tees on https://www.bonfire.com/to-all-those-tragically-hip/ and you too can own one, raise awareness for all us hippies, click Here

It has 10 days until campagin ends and then they ship out 15th August. So that was my Monday, feeling marginally better back wise, ice really being my friend for pain relief.

Tuesday I managed to go down to one crutch, feeling a lot less broken and I’ve started to actually move a bit more, I’m scared of it becoming too stiff.

Wednesday I did some gentle stretches, I found ones for back pain, I did the minimum as it was all about movement, not actually exercise.

Simple and gentle was all I was after, and now I’m finally back onto my walking stick, huge improvement since Sunday. Last of the nice days tomorrow so we decided on an impromptu beach visit. I obviously felt better in my head.

IMG-20180727-WA0009

Thursday we popped to Barmouth, a journey I don’t usually mind, though this time it certainly was harder and more painful indeed. But sun was glorious, water was heavenly and to swim was a good giggle. Only time my back didn’t hurt was in the sea!! My head wanted to do loads, but in truth just a quick swim and stroll to the ice cream shop did me in. Had to keep sitting down, not that the seats are comfy.

I practically slept all the way home, the day really took it out of me, way more than I imagined too. But I’m glad we did it, a sunny day at the beach is always worth it.

Phew then Friday it was my birthday, a lunar eclipse, blood moon and mercury in retrograde. I was bodily broken, still feeling the effects from the beach visit. But we’ve had a gentle day, with my parents, then a movie #spidermanhomecoming as I’m a Spidey fan. And pink gin, what could be better??

Sadly too cloudy for us, Thor God of thunder came to visit so we had no view of this spectacular celestial event, once in a century event. Gutted.

3 weeks post intra-articular steroid injection in hip

How time is flying by, it’s already been 3 weeks since the hip injection and even 2 weeks since the thumb one too.

Since then I’ve been active on our weekend away, getting into some exercise routines and just generally loving the improvement. Only marred by that in the hip it’s not a total fix. After activity it soon flares up again.

My thumb on the right hand however is awful. As soon as my left had its injection I needed to rely on my right one more, which has caused this one to flare up the same way. So although my left is feeling 90% better, I can’t escape splints and pain because of this stupid one starting up. Roll on rheumatologist appointment and maybe request a steroid in this as soon as possible.

IMG_20180717_205047_198

We haven’t done any of our couch to 5k for over 2 weeks simply because real life have taken over and it’s been difficult to fit it in. However I have done physio or weights or that other workout on most days.

Monday we decided to do week 4 run 1 and OMG I felt like I was dying. It’s 3mins run walk for 1.5mins then 5min run walk 2.5mins and repeat once more. In the runs I’m shuffling along as upright as I can, as fast as I can to increase the heart rate and lung functions, and practice my walking unaided. But I soon felt piriformis pain in the back, so waddle returned on the second set. But I’m still impressed, less resting, using uneven ground. The walk is getting straighter.

Tuesday’s physio appointment consisted of

Hip Bridges with Football between knees 25reps

Front leg raise and abduction red banded 25reps

Lie on front, bend knee and lift red banded 25reps

Sitting red band around knees hip abduction 25reps

Swiss ball between knees and squeeze adduction 25reps

Side steps red band around knees 80 steps

Came out barely able to walk!! Combined with Mondays couch to 5k and this physio session I’m done. Feels like walking on a dagger in the joint. And my lower back is aching. Need hot water bottle and rest now.

Had good discussion about a replacement with physiotherapist, but I’m still unsure. Whereas before my steroid injection I was deadly sure, so although the pain isn’t 100% gone it’s obviously improved enough that my mind has changed. Ever mindful that it will wear off soon though.

Wednesday is Mama Moons birthday so all exercise is halted as it’s a day of family and celebrating!! Wish I could spoil her more, but what do you buy the lady that has everything already?

Thursday is #WyattWedding prep, we are invited to our Nephew’s wedding, so of course I had to make some hairpins for myself

Didn’t do my hand any good, but I enjoyed the relaxing craft (though it’s difficult on my hand – right hand, left one still wonderful). Now just to pack and ensure everything is already, and we are all prepared for the next few days ahead.

Nails I’m wearing are #Primark nails as I totally rate them, they are my favourite go to nails. I buy a separate brush on glue 99p from #HomeBargains or #BM and they easily last me a week, usually 2 weeks.

So that’s me I’m 43 weeks post #hiparthroscopy and due to steroid injections I’m enjoying life with some niggles.

Steroid injection day 3 + 4 successes!!

Archive, Health, Hips, Hypermobility, Hip Arthroscopy, SURGERY, Triple Pelvic Ost, Femoral Ost, PAO

What can I say, I woke up feeling great today, though sticky from all our UK heatwave. But I’m not complaining, this heat is glorious. I expected at least 2 weeks of grumpy hip issues, and a catalogue of side effects like in 2016. But this time I’ve not really had any, a small extra amount of hair loss, but I have such thick hair it’s not too bad!!

Gently gently I’ve done some post operative physio exercises, and some days the groin pulled, but today on day 3 it didn’t!! And I’m not walking with a limp as much. Been eating light and well in this sunshine, so that’s a bonus.

So on Day 3 we decided in the gorgeous sunset to complete our week 3 of #couch25k. Crazy probably, but my god we did it. Hip coped fine, though I activated my #piriformis pain near my glute scar. I must stress I’m not actually doing the required times like a normie would, it’s all adapted to me and my disability and abilities.

Day 4 slightly sore knees, not sure if from just arthritis in general or from the steroid?? Side effects seem to be near to zero, whereas before I had 2 weeks of hell. Though last time I had Kenalog I got vertigo?! Wonder if that happens again.

Felt fine with physio exercises, so I introduced

  • Swiss ball pelvic tilts 20reps
  • Swiss ball hip glides 20reps
  • Swiss ball knee lifts 20reps
  • Swiss ball knee extensions 20reps
  • Swiss ball hip adduction squeezes 20reps

Then I continued with

  • Heel slides (lying down) 20reps
  • Front leg raise (lying down) 20reps
  • Front leg raise+ abduction (lying down) 20reps

It aches afterwards but that’s to be expected, and I rest well afterwards too. Only taking 1 x ibuprofen 400mg when really needed, often choosing hot water bottles even in this heatwave.

36 weeks post #hiparthroscopy week 2 couch to 5k

Archive, Family Adventures, Health, Hips, Hypermobility, Hip Arthroscopy, Triple Pelvic Ost, Femoral Ost, PAO

I finished the week 1 run 3 on the Saturday, it was hard but I survived even though hip was crunchy. The unaided walking bit is extra exhausting but I’m getting there. Getting ankle pains though which is concerning.

IMG_20180601_092007_476

The following day was Sunday and visiting parents day, so I’m glad I got chance to relax and recover my joints.

Monday still hip sore, I took a weights day, and Tuesday was total recovery day due as we had the #StaffordCountyShow on Wednesday.

Wednesday was amazing but ultimately it bodily broke me, just from standing when I had too, and walking when I had too.

Thursday passed in a lot of pain from the day before. This isn’t fun. But it’s expected.

Friday was the first day we felt we could start our week 2 couch to 5k. The sun was shining and we went to #staffordcastle for a different place to walk. But wow!! That was super difficult. More uneven ground, and uphill. I needed to sit down a lot, rest a lot, and afterwards once home I slept!!

IMG_20180601_143848_858

IMG_20180602_232252_399

IMG_20180601_133302691

Saturday it was weights day, increased

to 6kg dumbbells which felt so much harder to me. But glad I did it.

Bicep Curl 10reps x2

Shoulder Press 10reps x2

Lateral Raise 10reps x2

Front Pick Up 10reps x2

Bicep Row 10reps x2

Tricep Kickback 10reps x2

Chest Press 10reps x2

Tricep Overhead 10reps x2

So it was a pants week for the couch to 5k wise, but you know, life happens and dysplasia is unpredictable and crippling at times, so I know I can only do it when my body says so. It may be a start of week 3 next week, but I’ll be continuing with week 2 to finish it when I can.

29 weeks post op #hiparthroscopy physiotherapy

Archive, Health, Hips, Hypermobility, Hip Arthroscopy, SURGERY, Triple Pelvic Ost, Femoral Ost, PAO

Weeks are flying by and though I’m stuck in a limbo situation via the hip being unstable and super painful. The decision to do the exercises set aside for post op hip replacement patients has been working.

As they are designed to strengthen everything around the new implant and not cause a dislocation. I’ve noticed a small increase in stamina and strength, so I’m going to continue, and the hip hasn’t been unstable this week at all. So that’s progress.

This following week I’m going to increase the reps from 10reps to 15reps and see how that goes. I do find I exercise, do physio one day, but I need at least one day to rest.

Scar update, you can barely see them. Obviously they pale in comparison to my 10inch ones, but just an update for those only having Arthroscopic scars.

Now I’m itching to get out more once weather improves and work on uneven footing and inclines, as hip doesn’t like those situations so much.

No news as yet for the steroid injection for basal thumb or hip, hoping to hear more in the next 2 weeks time. I’m getting pretty eager to have them, even though they scare the pants off me at the same time.

Glastonbury Camping ~ Jasmine Becket Griffith part 3

Wow part 3 already, but I took so many photos to share, I thought it’s best to split the posts up so I don’t overwhelm you readers.

So last 10-11th March we drive down to the #SpringAvalonFaeryFayre to see Jasmine Becket Griffith and visit the Fayre, we planned to sleep overnight and we were camping!!

Rich found a perfect site, not too far away from Glastonbury, around 20min drive, so it did sadly mean we couldn’t visit pubs to drink in Glastonbury, but we had beer and whiskey for the tent (to keep us warm) along with electric hook up, this meant we had a heater, and electric kettle (bonus) we had artic sleeping bags too.

Our home for one night, honestly I could of stayed a week it was so lovely, peaceful and just perfect!!

Bathrooms well kept, power points, showers, hairdryers, vanity units, and artwork on walls. Kitchen areas well kept too. Cheeky bathroom selfie and hubby outside second kitchen area further up the site.

Included is also a pleasant woodland walk, to visit the onsite pool and games room, and restaurant. This site has it all.

After walks and setting up, watching the sun go down with a beer, we knew it was time to head back to Glastonbury for some tea. After much hunting, we came across some hidden sidestreets and found a chippy. Opting to eat in, we had the BEST chips ever. After those we headed back to the site for Whiskey nightcaps and much needed sleep. What an epic day!!

Glastonbury Spring Avalon Faery Fayre ~ Jasmine Becket Griffith Part two

Archive, Blogger Reviews, Events, Family Adventures, Travel, Witch, Pagan, Druid, Faery, Spiritual

In a previous post I explained that the weekend of 10th + 11th march I spent a glorious 2 days in Glastonbury, seeing my favourite artist Jasmine Becket Griffith, getting things signed and photos too. Along with visiting other stalls at the fayre, and sightseeing around this beautiful and quaint town. Every shop window was amazing, each spoke to me, the crystals, the witch tools, books, everything was incredible.

Have you ever seen such colourful vibrancy and energy in a shop window? I know I hadn’t.

Old buildings, new buildings, unusual buildings, it had it all, and I was thoroughly enjoying every minute of it.

Every side street was a treasure waiting to be discovered. You definitely need to explore and step off the main high street, you’ll discover some amazing sights. Walking through archways, crystal walls, the atmosphere is magickal, and it did my spirits the world of good just being here.

Next time I will show you the campsite and more Faery Fayre. But for now I’ve chewed your ears enough….

First week of #marchmeetthemaker2018

Archive, Challenges, Randoms, Miscellaneous

Yes I’m back at it again, using @joannehawker guide to allow customers, followers etc to see the person behind the makes on their shops.

Now I’m never going to suddenly be a selfie queen, so this challenge actually helps me show myself, without some deranged mad woman’s selfie looking back at you.

Each day has a theme to base your Instagram photo on, some are easy, some hard, and maybe some impossible?!

Day 1 – You, here is me at the last #sbsevent2018

Day 2 – Where, my local town is half olde worlde and modern.

Day 3 – How you started, I started following this surgery, I had a #TriplePelvicOsteotomy and FemoralOsteotomy done at the same time, and was rendered immobile and housebound.

Day 4 – Favourite make, mine is the Gothic style jewellery I did, that also got featured in Shine On Jewellery magazine.

Day 5 – Photography, I honestly have nothing fancy. Occasionally I use a white box, nice surroundings, my child as a model. But always always use my phone as my camera.

Day 6 – Workspace, I don’t have an area just to work on, I’m often doing it on my lap while watching TV. I love that I can do it anywhere. My biggest workspace is really my brain, it all starts here.

Day 7 – Routine, I simply honestly have none. I can’t always make and create as my own body works against me sometimes. So I can only do it, when I can physically and mentally. And everything I do works around pain and limitations.
